Thrive in place

Rachael E. Van Pelt, PhD inPlace Professionals

Hi, I’m Dr. Rachael Van Pelt, also known as the Third Act Optimizer. I am a geeky Geroscientist (geriatric+ scientist) turned Healthy Aging Coach. I am crazy about helping my clients prevent disease and maximize wellness during the best years of their lives.

Retirement isn’t what it used to be. We are living longer than ever before. But, without some attention to our lifestyle, those added years are mainly spent in and out of the hospital, rehab, and eventually long-term care. My goal is to help my clients maximize their health and wellness, to minimize time spent in the disease care system.

Before becoming a coach, I spent many years as a scientist doing healthy aging research. During that time it quickly became clear that simple lifestyle changes can have a huge impact on how the last third of our life plays out. But, it took me a long time to accept the fact that our disease prevention research was languishing in medical journals only to be read by other geeky scientists like me.

Our lifestyle strategies were not being translated by doctors to their patients. This shouldn’t have been surprising to me. Doctors barely have enough time with their patients to manage existing diseases. They certainly don’t have the time to discuss topics like exercise, nutrition, sleep, social and emotional well-being.

This is why, for my Third Act, I left the ivory tower of academia to pursue my passion for preventive medicine. Based on the science, I am convinced that Healthy Aging Coaches are a critical key to long-term wellness. So, today I am coaching people who are motivated to stay healthy, out of the disease care system, and optimizing their Third Act.

My Professional Biography. I studied Healthy Aging for over 22 years. After completing my PhD and postdoctoral training in the Integrated Physiology of Aging, I lead clinical trials at the University of Colorado School of Medicine for 17 years. Throughout that time, my laboratory was continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to conduct research on Aging Physiology and Women’s Health. I worked as a principal investigator or co-investigator on more than 13 major grants, published more than 50 papers in high-ranking peer-reviewed journals, and presented at least 40 invited lectures. My research focused on the changes in metabolism and body composition that occur with advancing age and more specifically on the impact of obesity, diabetes and sex hormones. In 2017 I left academia to start my own business dedicated to the promotion of healthy aging. My company, inPlace Professionals, is dedicated to helping middle-aged and older adults thrive independently by providing assistance with health, wellness, and lifestyle needs. Having spent more than two decades studying healthy aging, I now use that knowledge to keep people out of the hospital and long-term care by delivering comprehensive wellness coaching through the inPlace platform.
